tonight, the super storm taking aim at the east coast. impacting everything from flights to military ships at sea to the politicians campaign schedule. it's already killed dozens of people. now, hurricane sandy is headed here on track to mix with some artic air. and create a super storm. >> potentially it could be a very significant event. a very dangerous event. >> i'm very concerned about it. >> shepard: tonight, the monster on the move and straight toward the east coast. plus, a nanny caring for two little children accused of stabbing them both to death. and the children's mother, the one to find their bodies. >> you can hear a lot of screaming but panic,

screaming. >> shepard: tonight, an unthinkable crime in the heart of new york city. and knocking missiles out of the sky. tonight perform interceptor test on a scale nobody has ever seen. this one is real. we are watching the opening moments of what could be an enormous natural disaster because the first alert forecast for that so-called franken storm getting worse by the hours. hurricane sandy already killed at least 40 people across the caribbean. 40s in the haiti, jamaica. that is only the beginning. meteorologists say this storm is soon going to clyde -- collide with a blast of artic air and that could turn it into a juggernaut. a super storm. government first alert forecast ever first alert

forecasters say there is a 90% chance of virtual certainty that this super storm will blast the east coast. perhaps 10 inches of rain in some spots. perhaps two feet of snow in others. and out of control storm surges all over. one meteorologist says sandy could potentially affects more than 66 million americans. from florida, up through virginia beach, in to new york. boston, and maine. the governors of virginia, maryland, new york, and pennsylvania have already declared states of emergency along with the mayor of d.c. and power companies up and down the eastern seaboard are preparing for the possibility of widespread destruction. >> the advanced planning makes all the difference in the world so that we are ready to deploy our crews as soon as a storm hits and get power back on as safely and quickly to our customers as possible. >> shepard: of course it, didn't hit south florida but parts of that region have already had tropical storm conditions with high surf and strong winds. just a very small taste of

what folks can expect from this super storm. so, who will get the worst of it? we'll get to that first, phil keating live in fort lauderdale. i guess for a storm that didn't even hit there, you have got some pretty big problems there. >> shep, you are looking at what is likely the hurricane in state of florida tonight. this is typically scenic a 1 a the highway that runs up the florida coast line. right here where the water way has been breached. four lanes, no traffic and a lot of clean up yet to do over the weekend here. i mentioned this was the second time the sea wall was breached. it happened about two hours ago. the first time was overnight as outer bands from hurricane sandy with the strong winds, strong waves and big storm surge had commuters of fort lauderdale driving over sand on the road. damage overall pretty minimal in florida.

damage spur radiculopathy here and there florida was pretty lucky. we are pretty far west of the eye of the hurricane. tropical storm degree as level damage over here and impact. just a lot of wind and rain b.a. bad weather. what's coming your way a lot worse. >> we had hoped this storm smaller instead it's larger. more on sandy in a couple of minutes. the path on what this storm is expected to take detail it from a live report from the meteorology center. new science that -- signs that e economy is headed in the right direction not quickly enough to get many americans back to work. according to the commerce department. the gross domestic products grew 2% between july and september. that represents a jump. economists say we need 3% to stimulate specific boost in hiring. g.d.p., the value of all goods and services the united states produces. it's one of the best indicators of our overall economic health. we will learn more next week when the government releases

its monthly jobs report. of course, today's numbers have turned into new campaign ammo for president obama and governor romney with election day 11 days away. we have more on the political back and forth in just a moment. first, rich edson from fox business is live from d.c. explain why the economy got the boost out of this thing if you could. >> uncle sam, shep. solid boost in government spending up nearly 10%. this helped expand the u.s. economy. defense spending increased 13%. government spending on everything else is up 3% there are other factors like personal consumption, that's the amount u.s. consumers buy that increased by 2%. housing also improved growth. holding back the economy, american businesses spending less and exporting fewer products. and the drought in the midwest, shep. >> shepard: what did wall street have to say about all of this? >> the g.d.p. report was slightly better than analysts had expected. the u.s. markets opened up. major averages fell on disappointing profit reports and weak economic outputs. hovered around even for the rest of the afternoon. the dow jones industrial

average finished up 3.5. the nasdaq finished up 2. the s&p up one. all finished up for the week, shep. >> shepard: rich edson in washington. thanks. the white house says the economy is heading in the right direction even if it's growing too slowly. governor mitt romney called the numbers new evidence that president obama has come up short. >> slow economic growth means slow job growth and declining take home pay. that's what four years of president obama's policies have produced. >> that's bologna. that's bologna. we have created 5.2 million jobs over 32 months. what is mitt romney's plan? he he has no plan. >> shepard: governor romney did talk about his economic plan today and what staffers were calling a major speech. carl cammeron is in north canton, ohio tonight where governor romney is getting ready for a rally. what did he have to say. >> what he is really trying to do is frame the final 11 days of the campaign trail coming up with what he says is the real choice facing voters this time around. he has been saying it for a couple of days now.

this was the speech to wrap it all together the argument being that a vote for barack obama is a vote for four more years of the same failed policies of the last four years. stagnation and status quo whereas a vote from mitt romney means big change. romney is deliberately and intentionally borrowing on mr. obama's 2008 rhetoric for big big change. listen. >> what this requires is change. change from the course of the last four years. it requires that we put aside the small and the petty and demand the scale of change we deserve. we need real change. big change. >> and what romney is proposing is to balance the budget, to save medicare. he says, from obama's $716 billion worth of cuts. reform entitlements, cut taxes, spare the military budget cuts as well and all of, this he says, can be done in the next 10 years. the democrats and the vice president obama surrogates all say that that simply does not

add up. listen. >> i have got one word for all of those claimants. you may have learned it, recently. malarky. it's a bunch of malarky. >> tough stuff on both sides going back and forth. essentially romney today saying the president has failed in the last four years and doesn't deserve another. the biden campaign saying what mr. romney is advocating and proposing simply can't hold up over the next four years. now 111 days left and there t. looks like there is big concern whether hurricane sandy is going to interrupt their courtship of grass roots organizational last minute voters or not. romney is actually canceling an event in virginia on sunday night in order to steer clear of the storm, shep. >> shepard: early voting and absentee balloting have become a big part of the election. what do we know about where that stands? >> it's been very very busy. the candidates talk about it every single event. they are passing out invitations for people to go and do early voting. both campaigns spending lots of money and campaign and man hours in getting this organized.

they both acknowledge both sides have mg added a vantages. for mr. obama, he probably has an advantage here in ohio. in iowa as well as in nevada. conversely, both campaigns acknowledge that mr. romney probably has an advantage with early voting and absentee ballots in florida, new hampshire, as well as in colorado and even in pennsylvania. this is not the actual polls which, in some cases show either candidate up or down. this is specifically in the early voting and absentee ballot requests as both campaigns try put votes in the bank in the final 11 days, shep. >> shepard: carl cammeron live in north canton u ohio. thanks. when attackers hit our consulate in benghazi a former navy seal asked for permission to go help americans in trouble. his permission was not granted. and sources say even so, he and his team ignored the order. it was that that ended up costing him his life. that's coming up. plus, this child's parents say they thought their son was

benghazi attack was denied by their cia chain of command. in addition, twice members of a cia element that included former seal tyrone woods at the annex one mile away and told to quote stand down when they asked at 9:3:40 a.m. to aid the ambassador staff. the team at the annex, including tyrone woods, ignored orders and went anyway. woods' father responded. >> i was a hero who was willing to do whatever was necessary to respond to their cries for help if, in fact, those people in the white house were as courageous and had the moral strength that my son ty had, immediately, within minutes of when they found there was the first attack they would have in fact -- they would have given permission, not denied permission for those c-130s to have gone up there. >> two drones drones were repositioned over benghazi and

providing realtime video of the attack sites back to washington, d.c. that video he would have been available to all u.s. agencies, including the white house. when the cia rescue team returned to the annex at midnight. they radioed for help because they had started to take fire. just before 4:00 a.m. when the team sent from tripoli when included glen dorty had arrived at the annex. too late. they both had been killed. they had been man ago gun on the roof. we are told they had the coordinate nantsdz of those firing the mortars but there was no close air support that was sent. >> shepard: jennifer griffin at the pentagon. swox woman from spokeswoman. no one at any level in the cia told anybody not to help those in need, claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate. a fox news "special report" on the deadly consulate attack airs this weekend. i'm told it breaks down the

detail of the attack and the administration's response. bret baier hosts. it's on tomorrow. 1:00 in the afternoon eastern time. then at 3:00 and 10:00 p.m. eastern on sunday. it took only a few hours for somebody to shatter a temporary cease-fire in syria. a car bomb detonated today in the capital of damascus. amateur video shows smoke and fire pouring into the streets. syrian state media report that the bomb went off near a police housing complex. and 10 people died. hours later, somebody blew up another car near an army check point in a southern city. activists say three soldiers died there we can't confirm these reports. the bombs exploded just a few hours into a temporary cease-fire that marked the holiday festival of eaves. the u.s. state department reports the syrian government and the rebels have violated the cease-fire. the leader of the syrian regime ba sar assad made a rare appearance today. visited a mosque for friday prayers. activists say 33,000 of his

people have been murdered by his government. for a couple of syrian parents, enormous relief because they have just reunited with heir son a 2-year-old they thought had died in the fighting. the parents evacuated the capital last summer. they thought other members of the family had grabbed the little boy. turns out they left him behind. somebody reportedly found him wandering in the rubble and handed him over to rebel fighters. and now, well, now as you can see he is back with his family in cypress. back with the parents who had given him up for dead. wow. one witness said a mother let out a blood curdling scream, a series of them from her manhattan apartment building after police say her nanny apparently stabbed to death herr two children. the details on a crime that's rattled parents across this city. that's coming up. >> [ male announcer ] it was designed

>> shepard: an absolutely stunning story even by new york city standards on the covers of all of our papers this morning when we learned that police now say a nanny is suspected of stabbing to death two very young children before turning the knife on her own neck in front of their mother. according to the new york city police commission the mother krem came home yesterday afternoon with her 3-year-old daughter after a swim lesson. >> the apartment is dark. and comes a time where she goes looking for her children, enters the bathroom and finds her 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son stabbed to death in the tub. >> shepard: police commissioner says the nanny was apparently stabbing herself as the mother of those two children walked into the

bathroom horror. the mom had kept a blog of her kid's daily adventures. her 6-year-old daughter loved art projects and all things princess. and her youngest child 2-year-old leo had just learned to walk. the mother said he was speaking clearly, asking for a fresh bagel and cold milk. tonight, both children are dead. the chief fox report correspondent jonathan hunt is live outside the apartment on manhattan's upper west side. man, the whole city affected by this, jonathan. >> yeah. and the shock and horror of this tragedy, shep, being expressed in a makeshift memorial that is building up outside this apartment building behind me toys being placed there we watched as two young babies brought bouquets in this memorial. then turning away clearly unable to stop the clears from coming.

among the contributes, also, two tiny little pumpkins with a handwritten note next to them saying rest in peace, little angels. we also spoke to a neighbor today, charlotte freidman. she was the one who first called 911 when she heard the mother's blood kurd ling screams. listen. >> i came down the elevator and heard the screaming which was amazing i never heard anymore. primal screaming she screamed from some place else it was almost not a human sound. she was screaming from some place else. it was -- that sound is not leaving my head, you know. just not leaving my head. i didn't sleep very good either. >> charlotte freidman also said, shep, that she rode the elevator with the nanny and the two young children just 30 minutes before this whole

incident unfolded. she said she spoke to 6-year-old. she seemed in her words happy, happy, happy. and said she just had been dancing. shep? >> shepard: unthinkable. jonathan, you have learned anything more about this nanny. >> we know that she was 50 years old. ortega. a u.s. citizen, originally from the dominican republic. in fact, the krim family had actually traveled to the dominican republic, spent time with ortega's family and they described them on their own blog as, quote, wonderful. cops say they have found absolutely nothing in ortega's background or indeed her relationship with the krim family which could have given any indication whatsoever that there were any problems. they have not been able to speak to ortega at this stage because she is in the hospital in a medically induced coma. either way, shep, in this neighborhood, where there are so many families with so many children, a lot of dinner

plans and babysitters have likely being cancelled tonight and a lot of parents likely holding their children just that little bit closer. >> shepard: i'm sure they're. jonathan, the picture in the cover of one of the local papers today of a firefighter trying to breathe life back into a tiny little child. just rattled the whole city. a court today sentenced the former italian prime minister silvio berlusconi sentenced him to four years in evan prosecute. the italian court convicted berlusconi on tax fraud charges. he remains a free man until the ruling survives two levels of appeal which is standard over there its the first conviction for berlusconi number of legal cases end up having sex with woman, one and all ruby the heart stealer when she was underaged. he says it never happened. last week, he claims that his infamous bunga bunga sex parties were not wild bunga bunga sex parties but instead

>> shepard: the olympic hurdler lo lo jones unexpected route for u.s. gold now a member of bobsled team. marketing deals gave jones a high media profile going into the london games this past summer. she failed to medal in the hurdles, now she says she plans to compete in the 2016 summer olympics in rio. first a crack at the 2014 winter games in russia. that's just showing off. bobsled teams have used track athletes before to push the sled on to the track. olympic gold medal sprinter also joining the squad. >> i'm shepard smith. this is the fox report. it's the bottom of the hour,

time for the top of the news. potentially catastrophic storm is closing in for the united states. right now hurricane sandy is sweeping up the east coast. first alert forecasters say they expect to merge with a blast of polar air and turn toward land. then, crash anywhere between delaware and new york. the u.s. military indicates it will start moving two dozen ships out of virginia's north naval station. get them out to sea. and out of the danger zone. can't take too many precautions. as one meteorologist puts it, sandy is not a typical hurricane. he said it's more like a large nor'easter on steroids. our chief meteorologist rick reichmuth is tracking the storm and has the latest predictions. a year ago we had for this area was a pretty bad storm, you are saying this one will probably be worse. >> yeah. coastal areas in the northeast. this will absolutely be a worse storm than what we saw with hurricane irene. interior sections for northern vermont and those things probably not as bad. coastal areas absolutely.

here is a look at this storm right now doesn't look all that impressive. it looks big. you talk about this being a nor'easter. it's pulling all of this tropical moisture. storms hold a lot more moisture. you can have that much moisture ringing out into a nor'easter. that's why the rain is going to be so significant and going to be a very windy storm. rain already into florida. and we have had that there for 36 hours now. tonight moves in across parts of the carolinas. gets worse. the track does typically does. the start it moves off towards the northeast. then it cuts back toward the west. this is where it gets very interesting. don't pay that much attention to this. this category one hurricane. it's not going to be a typical hurricane and it's going to be strengthening as it makes landfall. we're going to be talking about major problems here. look at one of these models. anywhere you see the green and the blue, that's heavy rain. that's from maine. that's down towards west virginia, down towards parts of virginia. and the center of this just to

the south of new york city. you and i have talked about these many times. a storm coming this direction to the south of new york city puts all the storm surge right into long island -- in towards the long island sound and in towards new york harbor. worse case scenario for new york city. >> shepard: snow too for some areas, right? >> mostly rain event for us. will be snow that falls. back here across the higher elevations into the central appalachians. the snow that falls there, shepard, is going to be extreme. we might see a few places that get a couple feet of snow. here toward the middle to late october. trees have leaves on them. going to be power outages like we probably haven't seen in the northeast, maybe ever. that means it's going to take a very long time for the power to get back to everybody, shepard. might not be talking one week, maybe two weeks, maybe more. >> shepard: gross. >> rick: mouth in the weather center. when storms like this hit, the temperature in the air becomes the temperature of the water. on monday the high in new york city is 54. the low in new york city 54.

somebody hacked into the personal information of millions of taxpayers in south carolina. millions of them according to state officials. they say whoever did it used an international computer address to attack the state department of revenue and that exposed about 3 and a half million tax returns and uncovered nearly 400,000 credit and debit card numbers. officials say anybody who filed a state tax return going back to 1998 could be at risk. again, south carolina. the governor says the state will pay for a year of identity protection for all of those affected. >> both presidential campaigns spending quite a bit of time and a lot of money going after women voters. especially this the crucial swing states like ohio. analysts say they could decide who wins in a couple of weeks. recent polls show governor romney has erased the president's once double digit lead among women. mike tobin in columbus, ohio tonight. hey, mike. >> hey, shep. we see democrats here playing hard on their notion that a

vote for mitt romney would be a set back for women and would remove their health dare choices. democrats are working very hard to link governor romney to those controversial statements about rape and conception made by senate candidates todd akin and richard murdock. but they are not scoring points with all of the undecided women in ohio. >> i'm a single gal. as far as my concern is is i want the job security. i want that sort of thing. women's issues they -- sure they are important but they just aren't hugely important to me. >> conservatives are taking a different approach. assuming women in ohio pretty much want the same thing men want. they want a secure future and a secure income. so the broadcasting that message. both sides trying to win some points with the last football segment of the electorate. knowing that women, specifically ohio women, could make the difference. shep? >> shepard: mike tobin in columbus tonight. well, a car slams into a house and narrowly misses a mom and her infant daughter.

and that tops our news across america. new york. cops investigating why an elderly driver crashed through a fence before slamming through the back of that home on long island. a woman and her two month old were on the living room couch at the time. nobody got hurt. new hampshire. a husband and wife from block island died when their single engine plane crashed on a highway. authorities say they found one body in the wreckage. the other apparently thrown from the plane. it turned it up in a nearby wooded area. nobody hurt on the ground. california. folks got a sneak peek at the new shuttle endeavor exhibit at the california science center in los angeles. the simulation of a mission control environment opens next week. nasa retired its space shuttles last year. endeavour arrived at its new home nearly two weeks ago after a two mile-per-hour roll through the streets of l.a.

what's your policy? doctors discharged harry reid from the hospital after his motorcade got into a car crash in vegas it was a bad one, too. according to the nevada highway patrol. a total of six vehicles involved here. two of them vegas cop cars. two of them capital police cars and two civilian. the senator's office reports he was wearing a seat belt and that he walked into the hospital on his own. the office also reports he suffered some hip and rib bruising. but that otherwise he is doing just fine. skies over the specific today as the united states military held what officials are calling heir biggest -- i should say missile defense test ever. all three branches took part in what is a $200 million exercise. the challenge here shoot down multiple missiles above the specific coast near honolulu. trace gallagher is in our west coast news hub this afternoon. how did our fighting men and

chart. a greenish black foreign matter in dozens of vials of medication that were to be shot into people's spines. it's quite disgusting. inspectors say they also found bacteria and mold at this pharmacy that's linked to the meningitis outbreak in massachusetts. bacteria and mold that officials say tainted steroid shots from that facility and may be responsible for what are now 338 cases of fungal meningitis. killed, 25 people. of course, the disease is not contagious but some 14,000 people are said to be at risk from those shots. a massive fire destroys several homes and tops our news around the world in 80 seconds. china, crews say the flames broke out at one house in the southeast and quickly consumed neighboring homes. emergency workers evacuated the families and nobody got hurt. reports si suggest dry conditions along with misuse of gas and electricity sparked the fire.
